Environmental Policy

Jack Cotterill Tree Services Ltd (JC Tree Services Ltd or The Company) strives to provide an ethical service based on sustainable practices with quality tree and grounds maintenance and planting of appropriate trees.

This Environmental Policy is a short statement which lays out our Company's attitude towards the environment. It recognises that business impacts on the environment both through local operations and, more broadly, in terms of raw materials used, energy usage and discharges. We aim to set realistic and achievable targets for improvement that are relevant to our activities and practices.

We put trees first and refuse to remove or carry out invasive works to trees without proper justification and relevant surveys and will apply for Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Area Notices when necessary.

We refuse to be involved in projects that cause harm to the environment or that are ecologically unsound, for example, felling ancient trees or woodland, with out justification.

We are committed to the careful handling of any hazardous substances and prevent pollution by;

  • Implementing COSHH assessments

  • Ensuring pesticides are handled by licensed personnel

  • Keep dust and fumes to a minimum through strategic planning of works and tasks

  • Completing pollution contingency plans as appropriate

  • Keeping up to date on all information issued by Agencies and Government such as The Environment Agency and Health and Safety Executive

  • Running engine powered equipment at a necessary minimum

  • Using biodegradable lubricants, where appropriate

  • Disposing of waste responsibly

All staff are responsible for their personal impact on the environment.

Works are planned to consider the following which includes but is not limited to;

  • prevent unnecessary travel and wasted fuel

  • turning off machinery when not being used

  • not leaving engines idling / running

  • not refuelling on grassed areas and on client property

  • having spill kits to hand when refuelling to minimise damage and reduce hazards

  • refuel using unleaded petrol, vehicles. machinery and equipment where available other than diesel

  • Consideration of total numbers of vehicles in use day to day to reduce carbon footprint

Recycling

We work with local businesses to recycle tree waste in order to create biomass fuels. We also plant trees regularly, aiming to plant a higher quantity of trees than the number of trees we remove.

Protecting Wildlife

We work with ecological surveyors and experts in areas concerning protected wildlife and plan works around protected times, for example where safe and not during nesting bird season.

All commitments outlined in this policy are communicated and available to all relevant interested parties at all times with awareness training being an integral part of the strategy to achieve these objectives.
